Oven Maintenance Tips for Winter

You might be one of those people who don’t cook much in the summer because it’s just too hot. The cooler months are when your oven gets a workout. With that in mind, it’s important to make sure that this appliance is in top shape until temperatures rise, and it’s time to give it a rest. Here are some maintenance guidelines to consider.

Deep Clean the Oven

If your oven was doing double duty during the holidays, now is the time to give it a deep cleaning to remove the inevitable spills. Take out the oven racks and soak them in warm water with soap. Any gunk that clings to them should soften, and you should wipe it away with a soft cloth.

Pros and Cons of Self-Cleaning

Some experts warn against using the oven’s self-cleaning feature just because its high temperatures can damage functions, such as your oven’s thermostat, and cause the oven to smoke. Others believe that the self-cleaning feature is safe when it’s used infrequently and correctly. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to Clean by Hand

If you decide against the self-cleaning function and choose to clean the oven yourself, use baking soda and vinegar. Make a paste out of it, apply it to the oven’s interior and leave it overnight. By morning, you should be able to wipe down your oven’s interior, leaving it wonderfully clean. Make sure to wear gloves and use a clean, lint-free cloth or a regular sponge. Avoid using scouring pads that could scratch.

Washing the Oven Knobs

Some people are surprised to learn that the knobs on the control panel can be removed for cleaning. Just make sure they’re in the off position and pull them straight out. Put them in a tub of soap mixed with warm water and wash them. Don’t allow them to soak, however. Let them dry in the dish rack and then replace them by just pushing them back on their stems. While they’re drying, wash the control panel with a little dishwashing liquid and water. Let it dry completely.

Have Your Oven Checked

Since your oven has worked so hard over the winter, it’s also a good idea to have your oven checked by a professional. They’ll be able to inspect the oven’s heating elements, wiring, control board and power supply. If you have a gas oven, a professional should be able to detect any leaks or other problems you might have missed.

Your oven probably worked overtime during the holidays, and you might find yourself using it a great deal even if the time of feasting is over. If your oven needs servicing, don’t hesitate to call our professionals at Brian’s Appliance Repair of Forked River, NJ.
