Dust and dirt in clothes dryer filter

Overstuffing and Other Reasons Your Dryer Is Not Drying

You use your dryer to dry your wet laundry, but it’s still wet after the cycle. You do it again, and your clothes are damp at best. A dryer that is not performing correctly is frustrating. Fortunately, this hiccup is fixable. First, try another cycle with fewer clothes inside. If the results are the same, the cause could be one of the other issues mentioned below.

Are the Settings Correct?

Sometimes, the dryer settings are incorrect. Most dryers have timed-dry and auto-dry settings. Timed-dry will run the dryer for a limited period and then stop. Your clothes may or may not dry in that time frame. However, automatic drying will run the dryer until the clothes are dry. If you don’t have an auto setting, try turning up the heat a few degrees, letting the device run longer, or adjusting the settings to a higher one.

Is the Lint Filter Screen Clean?

Clean your filter screen of lint every time you attempt to dry your wet laundry. If your clothes are wet, the filter screen may have too much lint buildup. A dirty or blocked screen cannot catch new lint detaching from your clothes. It blocks the flow of warm air and becomes a safety concern and fire hazard. The screen and the housing where it came from need thorough cleaning.

Dryer Vent Trouble

The lint filter screen may be clean, but the dryer exhaust vent and duct may have lint stuck inside. A clogged dryer vent or duct causes low circulation and traps hot air in its drum. The heat never reaches your clothes. A clog occurs there after years of lint and debris buildup. A thorough cleaning will keep the dryer vent and duct flowing smoothly.

A Faulty Vent Hose

There are two reasons the vent hose could be the root of the problem. The vent suffered damage, or it had an improper installation. Both causes restrict airflow in the dryer, resulting in wet laundry. Steam usually goes through the vent to the outside, but restricted airflow brings it back into the dryer.

Hire an expert to confirm the vent hose’s installation and compatibility are correct. The same expert will fix holes, tears, obstructions, or dents in the hose. All hoses should be rigid yet flexible.

Did the Heating Element Burn Out?

The heating element provides heat to dry the clothes. A malfunctioning heating element takes longer to dry your clothes than a brand-new one. It requires an appliance expert to fix this problem. If it is beyond repair, the expert knows how to install a new, compatible version.

Only an appliance repair professional can fix this “dryer not drying” issue. The expert can clean the dry vent and lint screen and repair the heating element and vent hose. If none of these is the cause, they have the technology, experience, and know-how to resolve the root problem so your clothes can dry again.
